Healing Humanity believes that every human being deserves a certain standard of living. When the basic needs of survival are not available people’s creative abilities are greatly hindered. A person struggling to find their next meal, or to provide their family with healthy drinking water, is left with very limited time and energy to focus on other things like their own personal and inspired pursuits.

If somebody has a dream to be an engineer, for example, but they have to dedicate everything to finding food for their family day to day, then that dream of being an engineer is compromised as it becomes of secondary importance. Healing Humanity attempts to provide families with their basic human needs in the hope of creating a more hygienic and nourishing habitat, greater day to day security and abundance, and more opportunity for extra-curricular activities and hobbies, this in turn leads to a more dynamic, inventive, and creative society. When people can move past the struggle for survival, they open up to their own inspirations and live life with more dignity and purpose.

Many families who hadn’t been struggling to uphold their quality of living due to their prior successes, have had to regress to living hand to mouth after the tsunami leveled their homes, water wells, toilets and washed away their clothing and personal effects. After the tsunami many international aid groups came and began to re-build. Several hand pump wells were built, however these have proven to breakdown quickly. Healing Humanity has built bucket wells, these are more expensive, but will last generations. The same scenario for toilets, many cheap out houses were erected but hardly survived the first monsoon, Healing Humanity makes our toilets to stand firm so that families don’t have to go back and re-build. Due to the escalating violence of the civil war, following the tsunami, or simply because they ran out of funding, many aid groups had to evacuate the district, leaving many families with half completed housing. Healing Humanity provided materials to finish the much needed roofing for these homes. Healing Humanities livelihood projects are aimed at enabling people to earn enough money to afford their own food and clothing.

The psychological impact of knowing they have healthy water readily available, that they no longer have to defecate in their backyard and that they have shelter against the hot sun and monsoon storms can greatly improve the confidence and self worth of these families. Healing Humanity maintains that until people can move past the frustrations of surviving week to week, they are unable to have the dignity and concentration to go out and become successful providers.

A young family stands next to their newly constructed toilet.

A group of local villagers sit around a water well donated by the foundation.

Something as simple as a roof for shelter is much appreciated.
