United Humanity is a grassroots charitable organization aimed at promoting peace through the education and welfare of youth in the war torn and Tsunami devastated Eastern Province of Sri Lanka.
We've been operating in the region for over five years. When we arrived, our focus was to build wells, toilets and shelter for families who had lost everything in the Tsunami. In the hope of creating self empowerment we also provided tools and started several small businesses. We felt this was the greatest way to assist the people and help them regain control of their lives. However, our attention soon turned to the massive population of orphans that over a quarter century of ethnic warfare had created. Bringing the philosophy of creating self sufficiency directly to the children’s homes, United Humanity is now working with seven orphanages, providing for 83 boys and 165 girls aged from 2 to 18 years old. Our mission is to provide the basic needs they lack until our business ideas take hold and they no longer need to beg for hand outs. Our self sufficiency programs have included vegetable gardens, several goat and chicken farms, fishing boats and nets, and one bakery.
It is empowering for the local men and woman who volunteer their resources, time and energy to care for these children when the cycle of poverty is broken and they can partake in the local economy.
